„Long House” Kärdla
The head office of the Hiiumaa Museum has been based in Kärdla since 1998, located in the building known as Pikk Maja (Long House). Pikk Maja was built in the 1830s as a residence for the directors of the Hiiu-Kärdla textile factory. It was since then home to several generations of the Ungern-Sternberg and Peltzer families. During the period of the Soviet occupation, different establishments and offices used the building.
The Hiiumaa Museum science and exhibition centre has a permanent exhibition, about life in Kärdla during the period of the woolen factory and also has temporary exhibitions. In addition to the exhibitions, lectures, concerts and salon evenings take place in the building’s main hall.
Kassari
The Manor Lodge House houses have a permanent and comprehensive exhibition of Hiiumaa history from the origins of the island through to the last decade of the twentieth century. Of particular note is the wide variety of original objects.
The Old Lodge garden is an ideal place for summer events and the museum shop offers a great choice of local handicrafts.
The House of Composer Rudolf Tobias - Käina
The House situated on the edge of Käina Bay and it was built in the 1839. This is a rare architectural example of a village-style house. The house is the birthplace of the composer Rudolf Tobias and the exhibition gives a good review of his life and works. The exhibition experience is enriched with his music.
One of Estonia’s outstanding classical composers Rudolf Tobias (1873-1918) was born in Käina, as the son of a Lutheran parish clerk. He recived his higher musical education in St Petersburg under the supervision of composer Rimski-Korsakov and later worked as a musician in Berlin.
Mihkli Farmstead – Malvaste
Mihkli is an open-air museum, mainly consisting of buildings from the 19th century; it gives a wonderful overview of the traditional North Hiiumaa farm, with its architecture and utensils.
The farm has a large garden suitable for various activities ranging from the distilling of tar to the creation a Christmas „land” in winter. The farm has a rare smoke sauna in full working order, which it is possible (when booked) to use and enjoy. The picturesque forest border is perfect for picnics.
